MWALIMU NYERERE MEMORIAL COLLEGE AIDS DAY
Mwalimu Nyerere Memorial College yesterday the 4th of June celebrated their annual AIDS Day for the college. The day was marked by heartfelt and educative speeches from the faculty especially the President of the University Prof. Shadrack Mwakalila who was also the Guest of Honor at the event. The event was sponsored by UMATI, TTCL and VODACOM.
UMATI service providers were at the Mwalimu Nyerere Memorial College grounds to provide voluntary HIV/AIDS testing and counseling to the students and a traditional dance and drama team were their in order to provide entertainment education at its best. This team is the Malezi group who are members of Youth Action Movement (YAM), a youth organization within UMATI.
They told of a story which the audience could relate to in their daily lives. Incorporating peer pressure, risky behavior, loss and a powerful message which touched the audience. The theme of the drama being "An AIDS free generation is possible, together we can end AIDS". The drama was accompanied by traditional ngoma dances which motivated the youth to get tested and benefits of knowing your status.
Services being provided included voluntary HIV/AIDS testing and counseling provided by three service providers from UMATI, information, education and information on family planing and provision of short term methods of family planning by the UMATI service provider team, blood donation and cervical cancer screening and preventative treatment through Crayo-therapy. All this was done while the traditional dance and ngoma team from UMATI were entertaining audiences in the background. In total more than 500 students and staff accessed services at the college.
The Vice President, Dr. Thomas Ndaluka gave the final remarks at the event and officially closed the AIDS Day. This went hand in hand with thanking the appreciating the support of sponsors who made the day possible. It a great event, one which UMATI is honored to be part of. Providing Sexual Reproductive Health services to the young generation is a vital part of the development of our nation and UMATI is proud to be among the organizations putting practicability of these initiatives for Tanzania.
